Scarves can make a great fashion accessory or be an addition to a winter outfit to keep you warm, but if you do not care for a scarf properly it will wear out faster and need to be replaced. Proper scarf maintenance is essential to protecting your investment and helping them last into the next generation.

Silk Scarf – The silk scarf requires the most maintenance out of any other scarf you will purchase. First, you should never machine wash a silk scarf; it should always be dry cleaned or washed by hand. It is easiest to purchase an at-home dry cleaning kit and use that. Second, silk scarves should be protected from sunlight at all times. Also, avoid keeping your scarves in a place where the moisture is high as this will ruin the fabric. Carefully hanging your silk scarf in a plastic hanger is the best option. Wood hangers can splinter and metal hangers have several places where the delicate scarf could snag. Avoid keeping your silk in a dresser drawer because it will become wrinkled. Silk scarves also need room to “breathe” which is why hanging them up is the best option. Do not tie your scarves while they are hanging because this will cause unnecessary crinkles in the fabric and ruin the overall look of them.

Knit Scarves – A knit scarf is preferred during the winter months. It offers up ample warmth for the wearer and is less bulky than a fleece scarf. The type of yarn that is used for the knit scarf will determine the best method for caring for it. If it is made of a delicate wool such as alpaca then it should be dry cleaned. However, if it is made of a more harsh yarn like most knitted items then it can be safely machine washed on cold. You should always let your knitted scarf air dry since wool is prone to shrinkage. Knit scarves should be cleaned at the beginning and end of a winter season. The scarf is likely to develop a “ring around the collar” look from daily use. You should never store your garment for the next year while it is dirty and at the beginning of the season you will want to wash away any allergens that have deposited themselves in the threads during the spring and summer months.

Cotton Scarf – Simple cotton scarves are the easiest to care for. You can simply wash these with like colors and toss them in the dryer on medium high heat. Cotton items are made pre-shrunken so you should not have to worry about any additional shrinkage. If your scarf if stained then you can use a pre-treatment to remove any stains that exist on the fabric. You can store cotton scarves in bins or a dresser by simply folding them so they do not get too wrinkled. The creases from folding will naturally fall from the fabric while you are wearing it but it is also easy to iron cotton scarves.
